This small complex aimed to defend the coast and would be the foundation and beginnings of <strong>Sohail Castle.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It was in the <strong>12th century,<\/strong> thanks to the Almoravids, that a stone defensive enclosure was built around this small citadel, along with the creation of ramps and accesses that began to give it the iconic castle shape we know today. It was during this period that the King of Spain at the time, Charles I, ordered the construction of the moat surrounding the castle.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong>1810,<\/strong> during the War of Independence, <strong>Sohail Castle<\/strong> had more tales to tell as it was conquered by <strong>Napoleon<\/strong> and the <strong>French army.<\/strong> At this time, the English General XI Lord Blayney, along with the Spanish-British army, landed on the <a href=\"https:\/\/venafuengirola.com\/en\/tourism-in-fuengirola\/fuengirola-beaches\/\"><strong>beaches of Fuengirola<\/strong><\/a> with the intention of capturing the castle, but the French emerged victorious in what became known as the &#8216;Battle of Fuengirola.&#8217; Two years later, General Ballesteros captured Fuengirola in 1812 and, consequently, took control of <strong>Sohail Castle.<\/strong> This marked the Spanish recovery of the current monument.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_559\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-559\" style=\"width: 1080px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-559 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/venafuengirola.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/parque-del-castillo-sohail.webp\" alt=\"Parque del Castillo Sohail\" width=\"1080\" height=\"610\" srcset=\"https:\/\/venafuengirola.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/parque-del-castillo-sohail.webp 1080w, https:\/\/venafuengirola.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/parque-del-castillo-sohail-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/venafuengirola.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/parque-del-castillo-sohail-1024x578.webp 1024w, https:\/\/venafuengirola.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/parque-del-castillo-sohail-768x434.webp 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-559\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sohail Castle is located on a hill right next to the sea.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At various points in the 19th and 20th centuries, Sohail Castle became private property through an auction and experienced periods where it hosted small armies of the <strong>Spanish Army&#8217;s Cavalry,<\/strong> the <strong>Civil Guard,<\/strong> and the <strong>Carabineros Corps<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, from the early 20th century until the 1980s, the castle was in a state of complete abandonment, with a significant amount of vegetation surrounding it and ruined walls indicating its impending disappearance. Inside the castle, various artillery pieces found in 1914 are on display. The interior has also been adapted to host various cultural events, such as the beer festival, the medieval fair, or the incredible <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/venafuengirola.com\/en\/marenostrum-fuengirola\/\">Marenostrum Festival<\/a><\/strong> of <strong>Fuengirola.<\/strong> The empty interior serves as an additional auditorium for this remarkable musical event held on the outer esplanade.
